Houston’s First-Ever Youth Poet Laureate Announced

SAN FRANCISCO - Nov. 12, 2015 - PRLog -- ScatterRadio, in partnership with Urban Word, is pleased to announce the naming of the first-ever Houston Youth Poet Laureate. As part of a National Youth Poet Laureate Program launched by Urban Word and sponsored by ScatterRadio, Houston’s Youth Poet Laureate will be named this evening by Mayor Annise Parker at the Writers In The Schools Gala. Since 1983, Houston-based Writers In The Schools has been a leading local literary organization dedicated to providing young people opportunities such as the Youth Poet Laureate program.

The Youth Poet Laureate in Houston was chosen by a panel of judges and will receive a one-year contract with Penmanship books. Winning Youth Poet Laureates will also win a spot in a newly developed podcast exclusive to ScatterRadio called, “State of the Word”. This bi-monthly podcast adds to a growing number of popular poetry and spoken word podcasts on ScatterRadio.

In addition to Houston, ScatterRadio and Urban Word have teamed up to support Youth Laureate Programs in in Nashville, New York, Baton Rouge and Sacramento. Demonstrating a commitment to support independent voices, it is estimated that this year over 30,000 youth will be participating or attending these youth poetry slams during this year’s national competitions.
