BUEA, Cameroon - Nov. 11, 2015 - PRLog -- Saint Monica University (SMU): The American International University today announced that it has been awarded “the Talloires Network ‘University Education for Transformative Leadership in Africa’ Mini Grant for Engaged Faculty and Staff.”  The grant was awarded to Mr. Elvis Akomoneh, Associate Vice President of Institutional Advancement at SMU, who is also a faculty member and the grant’s principal applicant.

The grant of $10,000.00 USD was sought to fund the expansion of the St. Monica Health Center Franchise Project (SMHCFP). The SMUHC Franchise Project aims at developing a franchise system, whereby graduates of the Saint Monica University (SMU) nursing and physician assistant programs will be able to establish health centers across the country, especially in underserved areas, thereby providing much needed health care in remote areas, while providing jobs for these health care professionals and strengthening the local economy.

“The international selection committee was impressed with [Saint Monica University’s] proposal and noted its several strengths,” wrote Ms. Amy Newcomb Rowe, Program Manager, Talloires Network, Tufts University, Boston, USA. “You were chosen based on your potential to yield learnings relevant to others, your innovativeness and uniqueness of approaches to engaged activities, and expanding the breadth and inclusiveness of the representation of the Talloires Network membership.”

The Talloires Network envisions universities around the world as a vibrant and dynamic force in their societies, incorporating civic engagement and community service into their research and teaching mission.

“Saint Monica University is honored to be awarded such a prestigious grant by the Talloires Network, which recognizes the fact that we provide an education for transformative leadership in Africa” said Professor Januarius Jingwa (JJ) Asongu, President and Chief Executive Officer of SMU. “We fully identify with the mission and vision of the Talloires Network, given our commitment to strengthening the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education. We believe that higher education institutions do not exist in isolation from society, nor from the communities in which they are located.”
