New Business Book Summary for Real Project Management

Nov. 6, 2015 - PRLog -- Until recently, project managers were often "accidental"; they were assigned projects and learned "on the job" how to complete them. They are now being joined by a new "intentional" type of project manager who has had specific training and is ready to deliver projects on purpose. In Real Project Management, Peter Taylor describes how the experience and knowledge gained by the earlier generation of project managers can be combined with the passion and intention of the younger one to meet the challenges of global technology, increasingly complex projects, and the need to keep pace with rapid developments in the field. He then illustrates how to evaluate project managers' success in the real project world of today--and tomorrow.

Organizations must learn how to utilize the various skills and capabilities of cross-generational project managers to create a newer, better version: the real project manager. Such a manager will be better trained, better supported, and a more valuable contributor to a successful organization by responding to the following challenges:

*In order to grow and improve, the project manager must have a clear sense of each project's requirements and how its ultimate success will be measured.

*Continuous learning, on the part of the organization as well as the project manager, is the best way to keep pace with a constantly changing world and profession.

*Communication is a main project manager activity and a link with all other stakeholders. It is critical to use the most effective communication with the right people at the right time.

*Virtual teams working across geographical planes, and in some cases with national, language, and philosophical constraints, can be difficult to manage.

*Time is often a project driver on many levels and must be managed along with other issues, making it a wise goal to work smarter, not harder.

*A good project sponsor is invaluable to the project manager. Learning how to work together is a key to project success.

*A good project leader makes sure the project is connected with the organization's strategy and actually contributes to it.

*The complexity of certain projects must fit the ability of the particular project manager. Organizations that have a process of support and development for project managers will best be able to meet that challenge.

*Evaluating lessons learned--both positive and negative--is a great learning tool for the organization and a healthy experience builder for the project manager.

*Training and support, succession planning, and generational cooperation are ways to guarantee a healthy future for the real project managers of today and tomorrow.
