Ingrown toenail may sound like a simple condition, but in reality, they are very painful and may result in an infection. Dr. Elizabeth E. Auger, DPM of Salt Lake City, UT treats patients with ingrown toenails to relieve their pain and allow for healthy healing.

An ingrown toenail is when the side edge of the toenail becomes embedded into the skin tissue. An ingrown toenail can become enflamed, red, swollen and can be very painful. If the toenail causes the skin to break, it could turn into an infection. An infection is dangerous for the toe, and especially dangerous for those with compromised immune systems.

An ingrown toenail may be able to be treated at home with soaking and massaging the area. This may loosen the nail from where it is embedded. However, for deeply embedded nails and especially for infected ingrown toenails, physician care may be necessary. Antibiotics may be needed to control the infection. There also may be outpatient surgery needed to remove the portion of the ingrown toenail. The procedure cuts out a section of the toenail and removes it from where it is grown into the skin. For severe cases, further treatment may be needed to keep it from happening again. In those cases, a chemical may be applied to the nail bed to stop the nail from growing back in that section. To avoid having an ingrown toenail, it is important to wear shoes with enough room for the toes. It is also important to cut the toenails straight across, instead of curving the corners.
