SAN DIEGO - Nov. 4, 2015 - PRLog -- San Diego Self Storage (SDSS) and all 17 location across San Diego County, has taken the meaning of “community involvement” and “give back” to a whole new level. Earlier this year, the owners and management team decided that they would establish the SDSS 2015 Community Project and provide $500 to each of their 17 locations, enabling the staff the opportunity for charitable donations. Employees had the freedom to find and contribute to a local charity of their choice.

“We love being part of the San Diego community,” said Managing Partner, J. Terry Aston. “San Diego Self Storage was established in San Diego 43 years ago. We’ve grown, developed and have built a wonderful relationship with America’s Finest City. San Diegans have supported our business, and we want to make sure we are giving back to our local communities, supporting worthwhile causes and organizations which positively impact San Diego. It’s our way of saying ‘Thank You’ to everyone in this city which has supported our business so much.”

The staff at each of the 17 locations could select one charity or divide the funds across multiple organizations as they saw fit. For some teams, finding a charity was an easy task. “We chose the San Diego Humane Society because we love our pets and want to help less fortunate animals that are suffering. We believe that all animals deserve a chance at a good life,” remarked Steve and Tally, who manage Poway Road Mini Storage, one of the SDSS locations.

Zee Balata, the manager of Otay Mesa Self Storage was quite moved by the experience of donating. His team chose to give the full amount of $500 to Child Development Associates. In an email to SDSS employees he said, “This was a warm-feeling experience, to know that this check will bring many smiles and opportunities to low-income kids in our community.  The Site Supervisor, Armida Carbajal, was very honored and excited to receive our donation. She showed me around the center and pointed out the many benefits their children get while in the center. The kids were so happy and excited as well. Their expressions of ’thanks’ and ‘thank you’ as I walked out of their classroom was powerful and touching.” The teams who have made their contributions have all expressed that the act of giving to others is tremendously rewarding. It has lifted spirits in the office and created unique bonds among team members as some had personal connections to local charities.

“We are an organization of compassionate people who care about our community, and we hope to continue to make a positive impact in San Diego. Our charitable project works to involve our employees, to stress the value of remaining an active participant in the community,” said Director of Operations, Kraig Haviland. Haviland said that programs which benefit kids and animals seemed to be the popular choices for most of the SDSS location teams. Additional organizations which benefited from the project were Conner’s Cause for Children, Villa Musica, Mira Mesa High School, South Bay Family YMCA, Helen Woodward Animal Center, Integrity Charter School, San Isidro Recreation Council, and the Second Chance Dog Rescue. A handful of SDSS locations have not yet made their donation, therefore more organizations will be added as beneficiaries in November.

The SDSS 2015 Community Project is just one of the many ways San Diego Self Storage remains involved in the community. 2015 will be the 18th year SDSS has supported the Toys For Tots program in cooperation with the Marine Corps Reserve. AJ’s Crane is another annual event in which SDSS participates. And in recent years, the management teams have sponsored the Kure It Foundation, as well as participated in philanthropic events all over San Diego, like the Del Mar-Solana Beach Sunrise Rotary Club, 19th Annual Turf Bocce Ball Tournament.

“I am proud to work with a company which values philanthropy, which empowers employees to make meaningful contributions to their community. The SDSS 2015 Community Project has been beneficial for so many organizations, but we also feel incredibly grateful we can provide this experience to our staff. We aim to develop our employees professionally and personally,” said Haviland.
