Follow on Google News | Affordable Housing Network Meeting Wed. Nov. 4 San Jose CAThe meeting will discuss a plan to help form tenants associations while organizing Section 8 tenants and participating in San Jose's campaign for renters rights.
By: Norcal Press When landlords unjustly evict tenants, it forces the tenants to undergo trying to find an affordable apartment to rent in Silicon Valley. The Housing Authority recently reported that only 30% of Section 8 voucher holders are able to find any housing at all. Often they end up homeless. Often tenants have to uproot their entire family, take their kids out of school, and move to the Central Valley or even out of state. Often they end up with commutes of three to four hours a day. The Renters Rights Campaign is fighting for immediate changes in the San Jose rental ordinance, but its real victory will be strengthening the long term housing movement in Santa Clara County. Even with this campaign, the area still faces a hostile housing environment. Landlords are well-organized and well-funded, and believe many tentants have no right to live in “their housing” if they do not have the money to pay market rate. Congress appears set on a course to further reduce and eliminate funding for Section 8 and other federal housing programs. The workshop and outreach is an important step in the process.
