Parks Chevrolet in Kernersville is the presenting sponsor for the event.   Adam Parks, President of Parks Chevrolet in Kernersville, shared, “Each year this event continues to grow and allows the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina to reach more people through advocacy, education, access and research. Parks Chevrolet will donate a portion of each vehicle sold at either our Kernersville location or Parks Mazda in High Point during the month of November to the Lung Cancer Initiative. We look forward to honoring lung cancer survivors and those we lost to this awful disease on November 14th.”

The Lung Cancer Initiative specializes in connecting patients, survivors, and the general public with the medical and research communities to decrease lung cancer deaths. LCI supports those affected by lung cancer through research and awareness.  Across the state of North Carolina LCI provides access as well as education on lung cancer symptoms and what causes lung cancer.  The Lung Cancer Initiative has also supported technologies such as molecular testing, targeted therapies and CT scans.

“Only 17% of those diagnosed with lung cancer live 5 years or longer after diagnosis. Unfortunately, my father was not among those lucky ones, passing away just 18 months after diagnosis,” expressed Emily Parks, Event Chairperson and Board of Directors Member for the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina.  Parks continued, “Lung cancer takes the lives of almost twice as many women when compared to breast cancer and three times as many men when compared with prostate cancer. Described as the ‘invisible’ cancer due to so few people knowing they have the disease before it has advanced, lung cancer has few people that survive the disease. Lung cancer takes more lives than any other cancer, more lives than breast, prostate, kidney and colon cancers COMBINED, but, together, we can change those statistics.”

Here are some examples of how money raised from the LUNGe Forward 5K is distributed:

-       $500 funds gas cards for 10 lung cancer patients to access treatment or clinical trials;

-       $250 funds 1 day of life-saving lung cancer research;

-       $100 funds our website for one week, providing critical lung cancer information and resources to over 15,000 visitors per year;

-       $50 educates one primary care physician about the proper treatment, diagnosis and referral practices for those with lung cancer;

-       $25 funds one advocate to be trained to speak publicly in the community about lung cancer, allowing more people to spread awareness about this disease; and

-       $10 allows 5 lung cancer patients to receive free educational materials.
