By: Freedom Hall Franc D’Ambrosio Concert at Freedom Hall Some performers are meant to be on stage. They may be incandescent on the screen or inspirational in a studio, but it is on stage, in relationship with a live audience, where they shine. Franc D’Ambrosio is one of those performers. Franc D’Ambrosio is best known for his impressive portrayal of the “Phantom” in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award winning Musical, The Phantom Of The Opera. Affectionately known as “The Iron Man of The Mask”, D’Ambrosio was awarded the distinction as the “World’s Longest Running Phantom “. D’Ambrosio’ Franc debuted a new show: “I’ll Be Seein’ YOUZ… A Bronx Boys Musical Perspective of World War II”. The show continues in the tradition of stories from Franc’s colorful Bronx, Italian family and features popular war songs from 1939-1946. D’Ambrosio is also a frequent guest artist with many major American orchestras and symphonies. With the success of his national and international tours, D’Ambrosio has joined the ranks of the famed Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman as only a handful of Phantom alumni crossing over to successful solo careers. Tickets to Franc D’Ambrosio are $20 and are available by calling Freedom Hall’s box office at 708.747.0480. Ava Logan with the Southland Jazz Ensemble It takes a bit of courage to step into the shoes of a legend, one of the most beloved vocalists since the dawn of American popular song, Ella Fitzgerald. Ava Logan starred as Ella Fitzgerald in First Lady of Song a decade ago. Capturing Ella in mid-career, Logan showed off her “powerhouse voice,” wrote Chicago Sun-Times theater critic Hedy Weiss, and “sophisticated” Logan hasn’t been stingy in sharing her gift. In addition to performing in clubs and concert halls in Chicago, Los Angeles and Florida, she has taken her act to Paris and Rome and Moscow. She has performed one-woman tributes to Fitzgerald, Lena Horne and other favorites. In the process, she has acquired a devoted following that has lifted her into the ranks of must-hear Chicago jazz divas. A native of Washington, D.C., Logan grew up hearing the great ladies of jazz and great male crooners including Nat King Cole. But it took her a while to start singing jazz herself. At Yale, she was trained in classical music and was part of the founding edition of Whim ‘n Rhythm, an all-female a capella group. At the University of Pennsylvania, Logan acquired an advanced degree in veterinary medicine, leading to a career as a research specialist in that field – not your usual background for a jazz artist, to say the least, but not without precedent. After moving to Chicago, Logan began working as a veterinarian by day and singer at night. “I’m a jazz singer first and foremost,” said Logan, “but I love all kinds of music. These songs never stop inspiring me to find something fresh in them. As long as I bring honest emotion to them, I don’t think there’s anything I can’t try and make my own.” Freedom Hall Tickets and Information Tickets for Franc D’Ambrosio and Ava Logan with the Southland Jazz Ensemble are available by calling the box office at 708.747.0580.
