Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, England – Kontax Engineering Ltd is launching its latest product, a toy Stirling engine through the crowdsourcing website kickstarter. The Kickstarter website allows the public to ‘back’ a project, funding the development of the project up front. The backers/customers become involved in the product development and get a product that otherwise wouldn’t exist before anyone else can buy it. Glenn Turner, managing director at Kontax Engineering Ltd said: “Kickstarter reduces risk by ensuring it is a product people actually want. There is no chance of under or overstocking. More importantly we will invest in production tooling and production efficiency, reducing the cost of the product for the customer”. The kickstarter website has had negative publicity in the past due to failed or delayed projects, often due to people having no business experience or underestimating the development time or costs. Glenn said “ We have reduced the risks to the backers to almost zero by doing all the prototyping in advance. Everything is made in our own workshop and we have plenty of experience making Stirling engines. Kickstarter enables us to make a bigger batch, with better tooling, in a more efficient way.” High resolution images of the prototype product: http://www.stirlingengine.co.uk/ The kickstarter project will be officially launched in mid-October (exact date not chosen). Kontax Engineering Ltd Kontax Engineering Ltd was a conventional contract engineering firm until around 2002, at which point the firm started designing and manufacturing low and high temperature Stirling engines. All our designs, manufacturing and assembly is carried out at our Maidenhead workshop in the beautiful Thames Valley in southeast England. We currently have 7 employees and have invested heavily since 2012 to expand the business. We now have 4 CNC lathes and 3 CNC milling machines. Our products are very educational and are sold to schools, colleges and Universities worldwide. We sell directly worldwide via our website (www.stirlingengine.co.uk) Stirling Engine basics Stirling engines convert heat into useful mechanical motion using the expansion and contraction of air or gases within the Stirling engine. Stirling engines are relatively simple in concept and are able to run on virtually any heat source, even relatively low temperatures if correctly designed. They are probably best known for their potential to be more efficient than a gas or diesel engine or even as an alternative source of clean fuel, but currently they have only been used in very specific and specialized applications. For example Stirling engines provide power on some types of submarines, remote CHP power generators, CHP boilers, large scale solar power farms, small models and toys. They have proved highly successful in some particular niche markets such as cryogenics; where the Stirling engine is powered by an electric motor with the engine becoming a heat-pump.
