Tampa Attorney Volunteers Time to Free Immigrants in Dilley Detention Center

TAMPA, Fla. - Oct. 23, 2015 - PRLog -- Tampa, Fl - Mayra Calo, a local immigration attorney based out of Tampa, Florida has taken charge in this community as a leader in freeing woman and children held in a Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas on a pro-bono basis. These women and children have fled their native countries seeking asylum and protection from violence and end up detained in a U.S. jail in the midst of the desert with up to 2500 other women and children.

The conditions of the Dilley Family Residential Center do not provide these refugees with proper care or medical attention. Housed in double-wide trailers, the women and children have little medical attention, accommodations or relief. Without legal representation, the women and children are eventually sent back towards the violence they longed to escape. The plight of these immigrants caught the attention of several attorneys and an organization was created, the CARA Pro Bono Project, to help volunteers free the families.

Calo has made it a personal mission to free as many families as possible and is seeking the community's assistance in funding trips to help free the Dilley Detention families. Her efforts have led her to set up a GoFundMepage (www.gofundme.com/mayra-dilley), which has resulted in two successful trips to Dilley and four freed families. “It is some of the most fulfilling work of my career, “ said Calo.
