Dr. Amit Pandya, DDS of New Hyde Park, NY Aims to Inform Patients of Proper Oral Hygiene with Braces

While wearing braces, oral care changes slightly, but it is still just as important, if not more. It is vital to make sure you do a great job brushing and flossing with braces to keep plaque from forming around the brackets. Dr. Amit Pandya, DDS of New Hyde Park, NY wants to inform his patients of what changes you need to make to your oral care routine while wearing braces.

Brushing should be done after every meal and before bed. Wait thirty minutes after eating to brush, as some food contains acid that softens our enamel and when brushed right away, it could wear down the enamel. Brushing should still be done for at least two minutes; however it may take a bit longer since you will need to take care of the braces, as well.

Brush every surface of the teeth, as you normally would, paying extra attention to the gum line. Afterwards, brush along the tops and bottoms of every bracket. When you finish, use an interdental toothbrush to brush the sides of the brackets. This is a very small brush shaped like a tree that will help you brush underneath the wires without damaging them. You will know you have done a good job when there is no plaque covering the sides of the brackets and your braces are shining.

You will then need to floss every space as you normally would. Flossing should be done once per day. Use Superfloss or a floss threader to make the process easier. They allow you to easily get the floss underneath the wires of your braces.

Failing to take good care of your teeth and gums while wearing braces could result in an increased risk of gum disease and tooth decay. In addition, it could leave permanent stains on your teeth, visible once the braces are removed.
