NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Oct. 19, 2015 - PRLog -- Valerie’s Gallery will celebrate the Newburyport ArtWalk with a special in-store appearance of ceramicist Luke Chen from Rhode Island on Saturday, Nov. 7 from noon to 5 p.m. The public is invited to stop by to see the latest works in the gallery, meet the artist, and enjoy light refreshments.

“We are always happy to have the artisans we represent on hand to discuss their craft, and Luke’s imaginative pottery is truly one of a kind,” said Valerie Stainton, owner of Valerie’s Gallery, which has locations in Newburyport, MA and Portsmouth, NH. “His handmade, functional platters, bowls, cups and teapots feature whimsical birds, berries, flowers, maple and ginko leaves – sure to brighten any tablescape or room.”

Mr. Chen was born in a little farming village in the southern part of Taiwan, where his family that encouraged his artistic endeavors. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design, originally as a painter. He discovered pottery and now is a studio potter living in New England.  He is owner of  Three Wheel Studio in Providence, RI, a ceramic studio and gallery which features a mix of fun, eclectic, and unique pottery made by him on site as well that of other artists. More of his work can be found at http://www.threewheelstudio.com

“Clay is a very forgiving medium,” said Chen. “ For an undisciplined artist such as myself, it suits me perfectly! I can translate almost anything within my imagination using my hands and clay. Sometimes with great success, sometimes with amusing end results.  Either way, it only makes me want to explore the endless possibilities of clay-making even more,” he added.

Mr. Chen sees beauty everywhere. I think that is very evident in the wide variety of work that he creates,” Stainton noted.

Newburyport’s last ArtWalk of 2015 runs from 12-7 p.m. on Saturday and 12-5 p.m. on Sunday. A free brochure/map of all venues is available at participating galleries, the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce, the passageway between State State and Inn Street and at ArtWalk Partners’ locations.
