Be Prepared for Soaring Summer Temperatures

Things everyone should know before buying a home air conditioner

Oct. 19, 2015 - PRLog -- JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Samsung’s diverserange of air conditioners has a multitude of features that are well-suited to South African conditions.

“Samsung air conditioners offer consumers something different and our products’ operational efficiency makes them cost accessible to all,” says Michael McKechnie, Head of Digital Appliances at Samsung Electronics South Africa. “Most modern solutions, such as Samsung’s Triangle Digital Inverter AC range, include inverter technology. The Digital Inverters work smart to maintain pre-set temperatures, using up to 70% less energy and the built-in Virus Doctor and anti-bacterial coating removes airborne allergens, bacteria and viruses for a healthy environment.”

As temperatures soar in the summer heat, Samsung shares its top tips to help consumers invest in reliable air conditioning solutions to keep their homes cool.

1. Portable isn’t always perfect

Although portable air conditioning units can be moved around and are often cheaper than a split unit, due to no installation cost, the moveable unit can be quite complex. Usually these require an open window for the venting pipes so there is significant loss of cooled air, making them less cost effective than fixed units.

2. Know your unit

Split, window, portable, ductless, central, multi:  these are all terms describing home air conditioning solutions. Split and ductless refer to a system that comes in two parts with a condensing unit on the outside connected to the evaporative unit on the inside. Samsung has recently launched the Free Joint Multi (FJM) product that uses only one unit on the exterior to cool or heat up to five units on the interior. Window units are self-contained and sit in the window or through a hole in the exterior wall and central air conditioners cool the entire house, which generally require extensive installation.

3. Go green

The inverter technology in Samsung’s latest range of units uses R410 gas which is more environmentally friendly and extremely energy efficient. The optimal temperature is reached faster and then the unit quickly adjusts the speed of the compressor to maintain it. It also reduces energy consumption which equates to much lower electricity usage over the long term.

4. Get value for money

Invest in a unit that offers inverter technology as well as heating and cooling capabilities. For a little extra, you can maintain the ideal temperature all year round and benefit from your purchased Samsung air-conditioner which will be sure to last for many years.

5. Measure your space

In order to get the most out of your unit, measure the size of the room. Do this by multiplying the length of the room by the width. Then use this measurement to inform the type of unit you need – 15-20m² will need an air conditioner of 9 000 BTU 20-28m² - 12 000 BTU (British Thermal Unit), 45-60m² will need 24 000 BTU. The number of BTUs is proportionate to the size of the room.

6. Price and quality

Although cost is a factor when buying an air conditioning solution, one should see it as a long term investment. Consider a system that will last, has guarantees and provides value for money. Be sure to invest in a reliable brand that is supported with an installation service and highlights all costs upfront.

7. Check your space

Ensure you have enough space for both the internal and external units and that the installation distance is viable between the units. Generally it can be anything from 3-15 metres of piping length between both units. The longer the distance, the lower the performance so make sure that both units can fit within the specifications. Consumer should also consider installing the exterior unit in a shady place to increase its efficiency and lower cooling costs. Shading the air conditioner is said to cool down the air around it, so that it doesn’t have to work as hard to cool that air before blowing it into your house*.

8. Get technical

Invest in an air conditioner that is user-friendly while embracing the latest technology to enhance your quality of life. Selected Samsung air conditioners can be controlled over mobile devices with a specialised app, as well as being equipped with geo-location, voice control and programming functionalities.

9. Position is key

You may want your air conditioner to be hidden or showcased openly, but the best place is where the air can reach you and cover a greater room area to keep you cool without any waste. If the air circulates the room before reaching you, it can warm up as it hits the walls and doors and not provide the desired effect.

10. Read the manual

This is recommended to ensure maximum functionality of your air conditioner and extend its lifespan. This includes the basics like changing the filter, checking the fins, maintaining the coils and removing dust.

“Samsung’s entire range of air conditioning solutions delivers superior performance, while being kinder to the environment and making living spaces more comfortable, especially in the summer heat. We are hopeful that these tips will contribute to a cooler summer for our valued customers,” concludes McKechnie.
