CLEVELAND - Oct. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- www.mbma.com: The Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) is pleased to announce that W. Lee Shoemaker, Ph.D, P.E., has been elected to the Metal Construction Hall of Fame. Dr. Shoemaker is MBMA’s Director of Research and Engineering, a position he has held since 1994.

“The Hall of Fame showcases the best talent in the metal construction industry,” says Dan Walker, MBMA’s Assistant General Manager. “When you look at the work Dr. Shoemaker has done over the years it is clear that he belongs with this elite group of industry veterans and pioneers.”

The Metal Construction Hall of Fame honors people who have made significant contributions to the metal construction industry and improved people’s lives. Over his career, Dr. Shoemaker has been instrumental in putting together numerous MBMA and industry publications, including the industry flagship, Metal Building Systems Manual. He has authored many significant reports, technical articles, manuals and bulletins. He also serves on committees within MBMA and with other technical and trade groups, bringing his wealth of knowledge to groups such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Additionally, Dr. Shoemaker has supervised over $4 million of research contracts with universities and testing agencies on behalf of MBMA. He is currently leading an MBMA initiative with universities, which is intended to introduce metal building design and construction practices into the curriculum of engineering and architecture students throughout the country, which will foster an industry/academic partnership that provides real-world experience for undergraduates.

“The work Dr. Shoemaker has done on behalf of MBMA and the metal building industry has been extremely valuable and helped advance our industry substantially,” says Tom Gilligan, Chairman of the MBMA. “Wherever he goes and with whomever he meets, be it with industry associations, code agencies or universities and research facilities, he is impacting the perception and value of metal building system technology. He is an invaluable resource for MBMA and the industry.”

The Metal Construction Hall of Fame is sponsored by Metal Construction News magazine, and judges represent the major metal construction industry associations and Modern Trade Communications, publisher of Metal Construction News. Judges assess nominees based on five criteria: longevity in the industry; unique contributions to the industry; body of work throughout a career; legacy; and integrity.

Dr. Shoemaker graduated from Duke University in 1975 with a BS in Civil Engineering. He went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Tulane University and then received his Doctorate (Ph. D.) in Civil Engineering from Duke University in 1983. In addition to his 21 years with MBMA, he served as an Assistant Professor at Auburn University for seven years, was the Chief Engineer and VP of Engineering at Cornell Crane Manufacturing for four years and worked for Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans for seven years as a Structural Engineer. Dr. Shoemaker follows in the footsteps of Dr. Duane Ellifritt and Gil Harris, previous MBMA Directors of Research and Engineering who are also members of the Metal Construction Hall of Fame.
