Follow on Google News | Local Non-profit Recognizes Its 5 Scholarship Recipients At 9th Annual Costumes For CancBy: Janet Phleger Foundation In addition to annually awarding college scholarships, the foundation hosts a fundraising party during the Halloween season called Costumes for Cancer. The Janet Phleger Foundation’s 9th annual Costumes for Cancer event will take place Saturday, October 24th at Saint Joseph Parish in Sylvania. Beginning at 6 PM, the family event will include food, drinks, games, dancing, a costume contest, and a silent auction. The highlight of the evening will include a special recognition of this year’s scholarship winners, who are Jonathan Wright from St. John’s Jesuit, Bethany Trumbull from Toledo Christian, Nicholas Sugg from Central Catholic, Tramone Russell from Start High School, and Caitlin Matthews from St. Ursula Academy. Do to the overwhelming kindness of the community, the Janet Phleger Foundation was able to award a fifth scholarship in 2015, a first for the foundation. JPF also received a record 19 applicants for the scholarship, showing the need for scholarships of this kind in Lucas County community. “I know first-hand how financially and emotionally difficult it was to continue school while caring for a parent who’s fighting cancer,” said Executive Director and Founder Jennifer Brouwer, who lost her mother to Pancreatic Cancer in 2001. The Janet Phleger Foundation is a 501c(3) organization that has proudly served the Toledo community since 2007. Their mission is to help Lucas County families who have had a parent diagnosed with cancer with the financial burden of higher education.
