The Jamie Gagarin Community Room and Gallery- Tom Hlas- Mixed Media Paintings

LITCHFIELD, Conn. - Oct. 14, 2015 - PRLog -- Norfolk resident Tom Hlas acknowledges that his diverse educational experiences have colored his artistic work - from drawing and painting studies in Maryland to a degree in Vocal Music and postgraduate studies in philosophy and theology, as well as on-the-job-training in marketing and graphic design.

  As an abstract artist, Tom works primarily in acrylics and mixed media collage. He describes his paintings as a geography of the heart and mind. In his art, he tries to capture a sense of place, especially a space where one can go to be at home. At times his work is informed by childhood memories of growing up on a farm, at other times his paintings are inspired by the colors and sights around. The paper cutouts of Matisse, the abstract expressionists, the color field painters of yesteryear and the print makers of today are all sources of inspiration for Tom.

  In this show you will see paintings that can be seen as abstracted aerial views of imagined rural landscapes as well as a series that is steeped in a more personal landscape. His “Patterns for Living” series pays tribute to our personal, interior landscapes and is based on the idea that our lives are built on experiences, one stacked upon another. Because of these experiences (or despite them) we build the strength of our character.
