Having taken a decision worthy of praise to train your dog to become a SAR specialist, you must consider all the possibilities that come with it before it actually does. Dogs belonging to certain breeds such as German Shepherds, Bloodhounds, Labrador Retriever or Border collies have built a reputation for themselves when it comes to meeting the search and rescue duties. However, beyond race, there are certain qualities that set a good search dog apart from the rest.

The SAR dog should be light on your feet. Exercise is an integral part of the life of every dog, but a dog that is in SAR training is like a compulsion. Take your dog for a walk to the park regularly, do it regularly run and sweat. SAR dogs must be proficient in swimming, hiking and walking on dangerous ground. Ideally, this dog has to be exposed to all the elements of nature so that the conditions for a real mission do not take it by surprise. Socialization activities and exercise should be conducted at least four times a week, with each session ranging from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the age of the dog.
