Vaccinations are Vital for Long-term Health

Seniors should discuss vaccinations with a healthcare provider

ST. LOUIS - Oct. 9, 2015 - PRLog -- MediNurse, in its 29th year as the premier provider of private duty nursing in St. Louis, understands that no one likes to get a shot in the arm (or anywhere else!) when going to the doctor or other healthcare provider. It is vital, though, for seniors to be especially mindful of vaccinations that are necessary for continued good health.

Vaccinations for seniors to be aware of and to discuss with their medical professional include:

·    Seasonal influenza (“flu shot”). Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. During recent flu seasons, between 80-90% of flu-related deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older.

·         Pneumococcal disease (“pneumonia shot”). Pneumococcal disease is a very serious infection that causes pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infection that kills more than 18,000 seniors each year. There are two different shots available for those over 65 years of age. Doses and timing are best determined by a medical professional.

·   Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis/whooping cough): This vaccination protects against three potentially fatal diseases and is recommended for anyone having close contact with a baby younger than 12 months. Tdap is administered only once in a lifetime and a tetanus/diphtheria (Td) booster is recommended every 10 years.

·        Herpes zoster (“shingles vaccine”): Shingles is a very painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After having chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue, and can reactivate as shingles years later. While not life-threatening, shingles can be very painful. The vaccine can significantly reduce the chance of a shingles flare-up.

These are some of the most common vaccinations suggested for seniors. It’s a good idea to maintain a record of all vaccinations (type, who administered it, any reactions) and keep the list handy. Depending on health conditions, travel plans, etc., other inoculations might be recommended. It is always best to consult with a physician or other healthcare provider to discuss individual needs.
