Emmanuel Baptist Church Jazz Vespers Series Presents the New Century Jazz Quintet
By: Emmanuel Baptist Church Jazz Vespers
NCJQ is a collaboration made to endure and make a lasting impression on its audience. Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. and pianist Takeshi Obayashi are co-leaders, yet each of the band members contributes equally as writers and arrangers. They lead with the belief that the music is strongest when the range of talents among the group is fulfilled. Bassist Yasushi Nakamura elevates the rhythm section with vivid intensity, whether he is swinging hard or using the bow to evoke an intimate mood. Alto player Tim Green brings supple warmth that conjures up the sounds of Kenny Garrett, Charlie Parker, and Wayne Shorter. Trumpeter Benny Benack III (who, alongside Owens, Wynton Marsalis has named on his list of “innovators in the new generation of jazz”) asserts a bright tone and witty exuberance throughout, providing a perfect compliment to Green's lyricism.
New Century Jazz Quintet released their debut album, “Time is Now”, in Japan on July 2014 with a sold out Japanese tour. The quintet kicked off 2015 with a U.S. record release performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, followed by a run at the Cotton Club Tokyo, before returning to the studio to record their sophomore album, and their subsequent Japanese tour. NCJQ has performed throughout the U.S. this past spring and summer.
The recurrent theme of the Jazz Vespers is: “Experience the Presence of God Through the Sounds of Jazz.” Currently in its fourth year, the Jazz Vespers series has built a following of jazz lovers around New York City and Brooklyn, and continues to secure well-respected jazz musicians that bring an unmistakable feeling of celebration for God, and the jazz art form. As the group has stated, "New Century Jazz Quintet is so incredibly honored to play at the EBC Jazz Vespers. Our goal is to bring our music to as many audiences possible, and playing at church takes us back to the beginning, to the place most musicians get exposed to music."
Emmanuel Baptist Church is located at 279 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.
