WASHINGTON - Oct. 3, 2015 - PRLog -- In what it calls a “celebration of diversity  of our democracy” the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP)   October 7,2015  holds its 18th Annual Spirit of Democracy Awards, "An Elegant Evening"  in Washington, D.C. .  Several  of the nation’s top civic and community leaders will be recognized  at the dinner  which will include  a special   tribute to  president and CEO Melanie Campbell for 20 years of service.  Comedian Jonathan Slocumb will serve as the celebrity host and entertainment will be provided by  Fix Band and LaTosha “Love” Brown.

“The National Coalition has been a leader in the civil rights, women's rights, voting rights and social justice movements since 1976!  We are gearing up for the 2016 Election which will be critical and have a tremendous impact on our communities.  “ said   Campbell.

Over the past several years, The National Coalition has broken new ground to empower Black women and girls, youth and working families with tools to live their best lives through our Black Women's Roundtable, Black Youth Vote, Unity Diaspora Coalition, Gathering of Black Men & Boys Initiatives; and the new Black Voter Alliance 2016-2020 Coalition.

Held annually for the past 17 years, the Spirit of Democracy Awards Celebration recognizes civic, business and labor leaders, public officials, as well as media, youth and community advocates who support and encourage, active civic engagement and public service.  The Spirit '15 Awards will highlight the significant civic engagement and public service accomplishments of the following honorees:

Shelia Hankins, Co-Founder, Institute on Domestic Violence in the African-American Community

The National Coalition, founded in 1976, creates and enlightens communities by building institutional capacity that provides and develops leadership. By educating, motivating, organizing, and mobilizing Black communities, the National Coalition seeks to encourage full participation in a barrier-free democratic process. The National Coalition works to expand, strengthen, and empower communities to make voting and civic participation a cultural responsibility and tradition.   The Black Women's Roundtable (BWR) serves as the women and girls empowerment arm of The National Coalition. BWR promotes health and wellness, economic security and prosperity, quality education and global empowerment.  Black Youth Vote! (BYV) is the youth and young adult civic leadership and organizing training arm of The National Coalition.  BYV connects protest to policy by engaging and training a new generation of Black civic leaders, elected officials, advocates and political activists to maximize the power of the Black Youth Vote!
