Independent Film Chronicles Seattle’s Early Dixieland Jazz Scene

Local musician-turned-filmmaker eager to tell story of little-known music sub-culture

SEATTLE - Sept. 28, 2015 - PRLog -- Oakum Films is excited to begin production of a feature documentary telling the history of “Traditional Jazz” in the Pacific Northwest. Guided by the vision of Seattle jazz drummer, Mike Daugherty, Our Kind of Music is a film documenting the amazing and uplifting story of the vibrant elder statesmen of the Northwest Dixieland Jazz sub-culture.

“Whereas most films featuring seniors seem to revolve around hospitals, sickness and all those end-of-life issues, I want Our Kind of Music to really celebrate their heyday,” said Daugherty. “Now in their 70s, 80s, and even in their 90s, these musicians, dancers and jazz fans have been life-long friends. Together, they’re witnessing the extinction of a once-robust music scene. A scene that they built. My goal for this movie is to capture as many of these stories as possible – before it’s too late.”

This fully-independent film production is shooting in various west coast locations throughout the next four to six months. Daugherty and his Seattle-based production team is also searching for applicable archival recordings, film footage, photos, mementos and memorabilia from the 1930s through the 1970s.

Oakum Film Productions would like to engage with you and your readers, viewers and listeners about contributing to the film. “We know there are both recordings and stories out there,” Daugherty added. “This has been an amazingly collaborative process, and we love for people to share these things with us.” Please go to igg.me/at/ourkindofmusic or www.facebook.com/OurKindofMusicDocumentary for details.

Daugherty is available for interviews beginning Wednesday, September 30. If you would like to find out more about Our Kind of Music, or would like to schedule an interview with Mike Daugherty, please contact Jordan Rubin at 206.909.5971, or by email at jordanrubin@comcast.net.
