WEST ORANGE, N.J. - Sept. 28, 2015 - PRLog -- David Tyree of the New York Giants, Stephen A. Smith of ESPN and Jenny Vrentas of Sports Illustrated will be honored as Literacy Champions at the 10th Anniversary Gala of Write on Sports (WoS) on Oct. 14 at the Newark Club.  Peter King of Monday Morning Quarterback  (MMBQ) will be Master of Cermonies.

A silent auction featuring golf outings, a week stay in an idyllic cottage in the Loire Valley, France, a vacation home in a resort area, a Martin Brodeur signed NJ Devil’s jersey, tickets to Broadway plays and numerous other attractive items will be held at the event in Newark. (Tickets can be purchased online at www.writeonsports.org)

The first Write on Sports program was held in 2006 at Montclair State University and the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center. Yogi, who passed away this week at the age of 90, was a guest participant in the first program and answered questions from the 24 Montclair middle school students.

“I’ll never forgot that day,” said Nancy Hamilton Magee, a volunteer in the first camp. “He was amazing.”

WoS has grown to eight two-week summer camps, after school programs and special one-day events.

Approximately 200 students participated in WoS programs this year. .

The mission of the program is to inspire middle school youth to write by teaching them to write about sports – a subject they enjoy.  Students learn the basics of good journalism; they apply their knowledge to writing spot stories and a feature piece during a two-week camp. They role play, write scripts and produce videos on computers.

Guest journalists and athletes hold press conferences with the students; interviewing guests is a good way to build self-confidence. In addition to camps and after-school programs, WoS holds special one-day events. A camp includes up to 30 students. The student-teacher ratio is about 4:1, giving each student personalized assistance. Teachers are certified and many are from the local school district where the camps are held.  It is tuition free.

Write on Sports, a non-profit organization, receives funding from individuals, foundations and corporations.  The Gala is vital to raising the necessary funds for programming.    For ticket and sponsorship information, please contact Joni Bronander at Joni@writeonsports.org or 973-783-5588.
