Follow on Google News | Grand Strand Hurricanes Wrestling Club Open New FacilityBy: wrestleforlife.org The Hurricanes club is a non profit 501(c)3 community youth club that uses wrestling as a tool to teach our members about self confidence, self discipline, accountability, and healthy habits. We will encourage their understanding that they are student athletes and the importance of their education. Our ultimate goal is to help them to reach their maximum potential both on the mat and in life. Our program will be open to all children with the only requirement their desire to participate. There are over 35,000 children in the Grand Strand Area, 19% of them live at or under the federal poverty line. In a recent survey the biggest reason children do not participate in youth sports in money. Even recreational sports can cost up to $100 for a child to participate in. Depending on age 18 to 21% of these same 35,000 children suffer from obesity. These high percentages are due to lack of exercise, poor eating habits, and poor self esteem. The program the Grand Strand Hurricanes Wrestling Club has developed addresses the issues of low income children not having the financial needs to participate in youth athletic programs, and teaches proper nutrition, and exercise techniques. The Kids Play USA Foundation says that children who participate in youth sports: § perform well in school § have higher grades on national tests § graduate from high school § go to college § become and remain employed § become directors and managers § become business and political leaders § contribute to society by participating in social and charitable programs Wrestling in particular further enhances these successes by increasing self confidence, teaching leadership skills, accountability and more. Being a non- profit 501(c)3 the Grand Strand Hurricanes Wrestling Club depends a lot on sponsorships and donations. About half of their registered wrestlers either wrestle for free or reduced rates based on family income. All money received from sponsorships and donations goes towards off-setting the costs of providing equipment, insurance and a safe facility for the children to wrestle in. If you would like to become a sponsor or make a donation please contact Angela Wunderlich at 631 316 2710. If your child has never wrestled before don't fear. The hurricanes offer FREE beginner classes to help your child get acquainted with the sport. If you would like more information join them on September 26th between 10am and 2pm at the XGym 568 George Bishop Parkway, Myrtle Beach, SC, or visit them on their face book page. End
