Follow on Google News | “Mama in Training” Goes Beyond the Baby BooksNew class prepares moms for physical demands of pregnancy and postpartum.
“Women are being told of the importance of physical activity as part of a healthy pregnancy, but many do not know where to begin or how to modify their existing exercise habits,” says Jessica McKinney, PT, MS, Director of the Center for Pelvic and Women's Health at Marathon Physical Therapy. “We are excited to partner with women to meet this need and have designed Mama In Training to provide pregnancy-appropriate exercise that is in equal parts challenging, educational and preparatory for all that awaits them postpartum – lifting and carrying of babies, car seats, and strollers, to name a few.” The small group training class will teach proper breathing techniques, and target balance, stability, strength and cardiovascular training in an environment that is safe and challenging for healthy pregnant women. It will work to build a proper movement foundation to allow for mobility and strength as pregnancy progresses and in preparation for the postpartum period. Exercises will simulate everyday movements that can improve function, mobility, posture, and strength, and will involve body weight, kettlebells, medicine balls, and exercise bands, as well as common postpartum equipment like car seats and strollers. The class will not involve any plyometric (jumping) activities and is safe for pregnant women who are cleared by their obstetric care provider for exercise. Individual movement and fitness assessments will be performed for all participants in the first and last weeks of class. “Mama in Training” enrollment will run eight weeks from September 28 through November 19 and will be held on Mondays from 6pm-7pm and Thursdays from 11am-12pm at 425 Centre Street Newton, MA.
