HOUSTON - Sept. 12, 2015 - PRLog -- A state-ranked swimmer from Michigan, Matttison Grey is now a certified Personal Coach, Trainer, Public Speaker and published author who was a recent guest on his radio broadcast/podcast, Make it Happen with David Lorms.

She learned to swim early “as a family requirement,” she laughed. “We lived near a lake and my parents felt swim proficiency was a must.”  Grey continued swimming right on into a college scholarship. When Lorms asked her why she pursued swimming so strongly, she chuckled as she answered, “Bbecause I was good at it and got a lot of positive feedback.”She attended college in Ohio via a swim scholarship.

Grey came to Houston as an intern for Tenneco in their Corporate Wellness Department and stayed. Upon receiving her Masters Degree in Human Performance at the University of Houston, she became frustrated in the Fitness Industry and took a weekend seminar titled ,What to do for the Rest of Your Life.”In watching the coaches perform this seminar, she said she, “found the career I never knew I was looking for!” Her next career position was as the Physical Fitness and Defensive Tactics Instructor at the Houston Police Academy. “I got to use my coaching skills and athletic knowledge with the cadets and I just loved it. At the time I also played rugby and was very happywith both,” Grey said. “Rugby is a great sport. Currently I am the Mental Skills Coach for the American Rugby Pro Training Center Team and we recently won First Place at the National Championship.” She proudly shows her medal which she claims to carry around at all times!

“During my 5 years at The Academy I built my coaching business at night and on weekends. I finally reached a level of success to hang out my shingle and practice full time.” Lorms asked her how she grew her coaching business. “The old fashioned way – networking and free public speaking,” she answered. “It also helped me hone my speaking skills! I continue to build my clientele with referrals.”

Grey’s book, The Motivation Myth, was written as a joint effort with Jonathan Manske (available on her website, www.MattisonGrey.com) “The information came from a class I teach called ‘Coaching Skills for Managers’ and the examples that came from those classes,” she said.

Something Grey feels strongly about is in the art of giving compliments. She said, “Pay close attention to who is that compliment about?” For example, if you say, “I appreciate your hard work” you are talking about yourself, not the receiver and judgment is baked into the comment. People don’t resist their results; they resist our judgment of their results. The alternative is acknowledgement, which is about the actual results or completed actions and has a tone of appreciation. Use facts and activities so people know what worked and got them the praise.

How do you know if you need a coach? “I like to say I work with High Performers and High Performers who are currently not performing highly. If you feel like you’re spinning your wheels and not happy with the results, or are not clear about something in your life, it’s a good time to look for a coach.” You can look at a list of things that can help you make that decision on Grey’s website.

The length of the relationship between you and your Coach depends upon what you want to accomplish with your Coach. “We usually solve one problem at a time which should last 8 to 12 weeks,” said Grey.

Another directive Grey gives to her clientele is “Pay attention to where your attention is.” See the difference between, “I’m an idiot, I dropped the ball” and “I dropped the ball, next play…” In the first sentence the attention is placed on being a bad player, where the second sentence only acknowledges that the ball was dropped. By placing attention on the judgment (“idiot”), a mental picture is placed inside the athlete’s head of being a bad player. Grey continued, “My favorite example is the way you hand a glass of milk to a child. If you say, ‘Here’s your milk, don’t spill it,’ you will easily get spilled milk because you have painted that picture to your child. If you say, ‘Be careful with your milk,’ a picture of successful maneuvering of the glass has been placed in that child’s head and there should be less to clean up!” You can learn more about the witty and insightful Mattison Grey and her coaching and speaking at www.MattisonGrey.com.
