Follow on Google News | Dialysis Clinic, Inc., to host Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) health fair in CarsonPublic is invited to learn more about kidney disease on Sept. 11 from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m.
By: Dialysis Clinic, Inc. Rachel Rosete-Gantner, nurse manager of DCI Gardnerville, said chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a lot more common in the area than people think. According to the latest available data from the ESRD Network 15 Annual Report, 3,172 Nevada residents were diagnosed with CKD in 2012 (1). Chronic kidney disease is a condition characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function over time. Once kidney function is gone, a person needs a kidney transplant or dialysis for the rest of his or her life in order to live. 26 million American adults have CKD and millions of others are at increased risk. Because the early stages of CKD typically have no symptoms, CKD is often referred to as a silent killer. “Unfortunately, most people do not know that they have kidney disease until they are in the hospital being diagnosed with irreversible kidney failure,” said Rosete-Gantner. “There is a major need for early education. We want to be a resource for people to learn how to maintain good kidney health so that they don’t require dialysis in the future.” Rosete-Gantner explained the health fair will showcase available educational resources for people in the area. She said many patients don’t know about DCI’s existing kidney care services. “Our patients find out about us when they are in Stage-5 kidney failure. They don’t know we have free services available to them for Stages 1-4, such as Reach Kidney Care, which helps teach people how to prolong kidney function through proper nutrition and lifestyle choices,” said Rosete-Gantner. The CKD education team comprised of DCI nurses, technicians, dietitians, and social workers will be available to answer any questions attendees may have about kidney disease or dialysis. They will also provide insight into the following topics: - Kidney Health - Causes of Kidney Disease - How to Preserve Kidney Function - Healthy Habits - What Happens When Kidneys Fail - Ongoing CKD education DCI has participated in other health fairs, however, this is the first time the DCI team of Northern Nevada’s has hosted its own kidney specific health fair. “We get a great response rate when we participate in other health fairs. So, our staff is really excited to host an event to exclusively promote proper kidney care and education,” said Rosete-Gantner. “We’ Kidney-friendly food, educational material and take-home items will be available for attendees.
