Rejjee partners with the MBTA Police & Boston Police Department to stop bike theft

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sept. 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Rejjee, Inc. has partnered with the MBTA Police and the Boston Police Department to launch Rejjee your Ride, the largest integrated anti-bike theft program in the country. The program is also led by the Arlington Police, Northeastern University Police, Boston University Police, and Lesley University Campus Safety. Bike industry groups have been quick to join in with support from MassBike, Boston Bikes, and MassCommute. The program is a direct response to bike theft in and around Boston. More than two million bikes are stolen each year in the US and fewer than two percent are recovered by their rightful owner because so few bikes are registered. Rejjee is a free national mobile bike registry with embedded real-time loss/theft reporting and crowd-sourced lost & found.

Commissioner William Evans of the Boston Police Department says, “The Boston Police Department is aware that riding bicycles is a primary form of transportation and recreation for a vast majority of Bostonians; therefore, we continue to work diligently to return stolen and recovered bikes to their rightful owners. We believe this bike program is a great tool that will connect the BPD, other Boston area police departments, and members of the community, so we encourage the public to register their bicycles and use this collaborative program to their advantage.”

The program has already proven successful. A Rejjee user named ‘Lucy’ called the Boston Police to report the theft of four bikes from her backyard shed in Allston, MA. She also posted the stolen bikes on Rejjee. Within days one of her bikes was listed on Craigslist from a seller in nearby Charlestown. She called police and because she had her serial number they were able to set up a sting, confront the seller – and Lucy got her bike back! And about ten days later Lucy got her second stolen bike back.

In a similar early success for the program, MBTA Police reported more than forty found bikes on Rejjee. Lt. Richard Sullivan of the MBTA Transit Police stated, “The Transit Police are committed to ensuring the safest system possible for all to enjoy. We believe our partnership with Rejjee will prove to be a great benefit to our patrons who ride their bicycles to our stations and assist us in our campaign in reducing bike thefts on the MBTA. We have already experienced early success as we were able to reunite one of our patrons with his bicycle which was valued at over 1,000 dollars.”

The Rejjee your Ride campaign will be rolled out to cities throughout the country in partnership with Microsoft. “Our goal is to register one million bikes,” says Ken Smith, Rejjee’s co-founder and head of product. “Our partners at Microsoft are already helping us integrate the program in cities across the country.”
