Bay City Rollers' Les McKeown Visits Jersey Shore for Fan Event
But on August 15, Les McKeown, the voice of 20th century superstar pop band the Bay City Rollers, did just that, providing a very memorable Saturday night for those lucky enough to attend.
McKeown, who lives in London, planned a whirlwind, one-day trip to New Jersey to visit fans in the NJ-metro area, and to “test drive” his P1 US visa, he announced on his Facebook page.
Originally slated for a June appearance at a “fan fest” in Philadelphia, the singer had to cancel, as his visa was delayed for several weeks after a computer glitch sidelined processing of more than 700,0000 US visas worldwide.
“It was important to me to come to the US as soon as I did receive my visa,” McKeown said. “I knew I could work in a brief visit to connect with fans who'd been waiting.”
McKeown spent nearly three hours with attendees at Rosina's Ristorante – chatting, posing for photos, and autographing record albums, CDs and other Bay City Rollers memorabilia.
For many of the attendees, limited to 30 at Saturday's event, it was their first opportunity to meet the teen idol whose face graced their school lockers and bedroom walls nearly 40 years ago.
Some entertainers, including McKeown, are using social media to connect with fans on a more regular basis. In fact, Saturday's event was announced and promoted entirely through Facebook, Twitter and Eventbrite, an online event management platform.
McKeown has fronted his current band, Bay City Rollers Starring Les McKeown, for more than 40 years. They're about to start an extensive fall tour on September 1 playing 74 dates in the UK and Ireland through the end of the year, while promoting their upcoming new record, “Boomerang”
He is planning to return to the US in 2016 for a series of similar visits.
