Follow on Google News | Medical Doctors, Orem Chiropractors and Millions of DollarsBy: AskDrNed.com of Dollars - is an announcement and a review of a research article titled Regional Supply of Chiropractic Care and and Visits to Primary Care Physicians for Back and Neck Pain and appeared in the Journal of The American Board of Family Medicine. In this study researchers looked at almost eighteen million people who were in enrolled in Medicare from 2010 to 2011. They looked at the relationship between the supply of chiropractic care, or number of chiropractors in a region, and the number of annual visits to primary care physicians in the same region for back and or neck pain. In this study researchers found that there was an inverse relationship between the supply of chiropractic care (number of chiropractors in an area) and the number of annual visits to primary care physicians. In their own words, the authors said that this relationship was, "apparent." I translate that to mean "obvious." Meaning that as the number of chiropractors in an area goes up the number of visits to primary care physicians goes down. While I didn't get deep enough into the research to find what regions of the country and the actual number differences, the authors pointed out that there was an eight percent difference in primary care visits between the region with the highest concentration of chiropractors and the region with the lowest concentration. Here's where it gets really good. Researchers found that this eight percent reduction in primary care visits saved eighty three and a half million dollars! ($83,500,000) If an eight percent reduction in primary care visits, just for neck and back pain saved nearly a hundred million dollars what would happen if all spine related conditions went to chiropractors? I can only imagine. End
