Ancient Craft Brought Into The 21st Century

STAFFORD, U.K. - Aug. 14, 2015 - PRLog -- These days, designing and ordering bespoke items, such as laptops, over the Internet is commonplace, but that is not yet the case for all traditional industries and hand-made products. However, one craft that goes back centuries has now been brought right up to date, with an innovative website feature that is set to put a Stafford start-up right in the frame.

Oak Timber Structures, based at Hixon Airfield Industrial Estate, has created the first ever web service that allows anyone to design, price and order a solid oak truss from the comfort of their computer.

"We have scoured the web and haven’t found anything with this degree of functionality,” said Dave Coleman, 31, Technical Director of Oak Timber Structures. “As far as we know, this is a genuine world first."

Until now, anyone wanting an oak truss, such as people converting a barn or architects designing a dream home, has had to locate a suitable workshop, agree designs and negotiate a price, all of which takes precious time. "Our 3D oak truss designer cuts all of that out,” said Dave, “and the pricing is clear and transparent. We supply complete kits ready for the customer’s builder to assemble. This all saves on both design time and costs."

Both Dave and his business partner Simon Purchase, 32, went to Walton High School, which already has a reputation for producing talented and innovative designers, such as Jonny Ive, the Chief Design Officer of Apple, famous for creating the iconic look of the iPod.

Simon, the firm’s Sales Director, told us, "People have used these traditional oak trusses in the construction of all kinds of buildings for hundreds of years, so we’re delighted to have brought such a traditional product into the Internet age. Our hope now is that architects, builders and people project managing their own Grand Design will take advantage of this great innovation."
