Snorkeling and Scuba-diving in The Black Sea

Recently, Snorkeling& Scuba-diving became a favorite pastime

BLACK SEA COAST, Bulgaria - Aug. 8, 2015 - PRLog -- In recent years, snorkeling and scuba-diving on the Black Sea coast has become a favorite pastime with Bulgarians and foreign guests. Well-equipped with diving outfits and underwater cameras, and accompanied by experienced instructors, the adventurers plunge into the waters of the Black Sea and head straight for underwater caves and reefs, shipwrecks, or military aircraft lying on the bottom. On their way into the depths, the divers meet various representatives of the maritime flora and fauna, including several endangered species. It is a unique experience and holds no risk whatsoever, underwater sports experts claim. The Black Sea is known as a friendly sea. There are nothing like sudden “Jaws” attacks, exotic underwater creature bites, or things of that sort. Visibility in the Black Sea is often not very good, but it is well compensated by an abundance of shipwrecks and maritime flora and fauna views.

Under water diving lasts from April to November in Bulgaria, but the summer months are the most favorable time for this exciting sport. The greatest enthusiasts come from the UK, Germany and Russia. Children also dive deep into the waters of the sea. In the opinion of their parents this is the best way to get them to appreciate nature, and hopefully help rescue it one day from the devastating incursions of contemporary civilization. The youngest age at which a child is allowed to dive is 8 years. On the other hand, there is no upper age limit, provided the person does not have a major health condition that makes diving a risk.

There is much to see in the depths of the Black Sea, but experienced divers report you have to keep your eyes wide open and be on alert for opportune ‘meetings’ with the species of maritime flora and  fauna. In their opinion, this is the only way for one to spot the ‘masters of camouflage’, like the flounder, sea dragon, or sea scorpion. Their incredible ability to alter their external coloring depending on the environment poses a serious challenge even to the sharpest eyesight.  There are many cave and rock formations along the Black Sea coast which have become safe habitats for the underwater world. Crustaceans and a wide assortment of fish are found in large schools near the reefs, next to their openings with the sea. The mating rituals of the sea horse in June, for instance, are a lovely sight, as well as the darting of anchovy schools during late summer. Dueling crabs on the seabed floor will cause you to lose track of time.

Frequently you can see a ‘jelly fish snowfall’ - a magical, mystical sight! And finally, if you are very lucky you may even catch a sight of a Black Sea shark in its natural habitat. Black Sea sharks are rather small, and are usually more afraid of you than you are of them. They attempt to avoid humans whenever possible.

In recent years, divers have expressed a genuine interest in diving sunken ships and aircraft. Some shipwrecks are more than 3000 years old. These are merchant vessels which sank in ancient times. But the largest number of wrecks date only to World War II. Divers are looking for them in particular because they have become artificial reefs for the flora and fauna. Some foreign visitors come here intending to visit certain vessels or aircraft which they know to have sunk in the area.

Sea diving is, in fact, an experience similar to levitating in outer space. It is no coincidence that the underwater world is perceived as the mirror reflection of space, in that it feels much the same as weightlessness. This is why astronauts spend some of their training period under water. Much like space explorers, divers in the Black Sea feel like true discoverers of a mystical world that remains inaccessible to the majority of people.

Where to go for snorkeling and in scuba-diving in the Black Sea?

You can snorkel wherever you can find a beach. For scuba-diving you will need to go to bigger towns where you can find scuba clubs, such as Nessebar, Sveti Vlas or Sozopol.

Nessebar is a great place to visit.

There are two major diving centers in the Nessebar area:  The “Angel-Divers” Club, and the “NEMO” Diving Center.

Angel-Divers” Club

Angel Divers was founded by Angel Georgiev in 1999 in the town of Nessebar. From the very beginning they focused on teaching beginner divers in accordance with PADI standards. The Club offers internationally certified instructors, insured in accordance with international standards.

In 2008, Angel-Divers was bought by “Lalov Egrek Management” Ltd. which made it possible to expand their territory into the southern part of the Black Sea coast. Angel-Divers’ main base is now located in the town of Tsarevo in the complex “Lalov Egrek”. This complex was specially designed to accommodate the diving center. Among the miscellaneous diving facilities and accommodations, the center possesses a 3.6 meter diving pool with a unique glass wall that allows visitors to observe divers’ training.

Angel-Divers Club has certified more than 500 divers and performed over 8000 dives with tourists.

Angel-Divers provides the widest range of Scuba Diving Courses and Diving Day Trips along the south coast of the Black Sea in Bulgaria. They will meet the needs of families, groups, couples and individual divers.

Angel-Divers offers flora and fauna observing dives, in addition to shipwreck dives.

“NEMO” Diving Center

NEMO” is located in Old Nessebar’s yacht port. The Center has the very latest equipment necessary to perform diving - gear, compressors, teaching materials, a training room, retail space, its own transport, a boat, etc.

Customers who have never dived before can do so at the center, the only condition being that they should be in good health.

Excursions to various destinations are organized for certified divers to go wreck diving. With NEMO you can explore the merchant ship “Peles," sunk by a Soviet submarine during the World War II (22 metres), the SS Mopang, an American cargo steamer which was sunk by a mine near Burgas in 1921 (32 metres), or the SS Rodina, a Bulgarian steamship that struck a mine and sank 38 kilometres from Burgas in 1941 (42 metres). These dives are available to experienced divers ONLY.

The center also has underwater photography equipment available to those who wish to take underwater photos.
