Saint Monica University Appoints Dean of School of Applied Sciences

BUEA, Cameroon - Aug. 8, 2015 - PRLog -- Saint Monica University (SMU): The American International University today announced the appointment of Dr. Sylvester Ndeso Atanga as the Dean of the School of Applied Sciences. Dr. Atanga will serve as the administrator and supervisor of the Department of Health Sciences and the Department of Science and Technology. The position will report directly to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

“We are excited to have someone of Dr. Atanga’s education and experience leading our new School of Applied Sciences,” said Professor Januarius Jingwa Asongu, President and Chief Executive Officer of SMU. “He will provide leadership to develop, organize and implement the programs’ goals and objectives; provide leadership to plan, develop, organize, schedule, direct, improve and evaluate the curriculum in consultation with department heads, faculty and staff.”

Prior to coming to SMU, Dr. Atanga has held senior positions in academia and the Cameroon public sector. He was Head of the Department of Nursing Science at the University of Buea, Cameroon, where he was also the Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology/Public Health and Nursing as well as an Academic Adviser and Theses Supervisor. At the Ministry of Public Health, he held the position of National Director of the Diarrheal Diseases Program; Provincial Chief of Planning/Health Statistics, North Province, Cameroon; and Chief of Epidemiology responsible for Monitoring, Surveillance and Control of Major Endemic Diseases, Department of Preventive Medicine, Central Services. He has also worked in the United States and consulted on various national and international projects in various parts of the world.

Dr. Atanga is a seasoned scholar with over a dozen scholarly publications and an impressive research portfolio. His rich academic profile includes a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Health Medicine from  the University of Ghana, Legon School of Public Health; Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Public Health Policy from the London School Of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (UK); Certificate in New Institutional Economics from the University of California at Berkeley (USA); Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology & Health Administration from the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health at the Yale University School of Medicine (USA); Bachelor’s of Arts (BA) (Hons) in Medicine, Health & Society from the City College of the University of New York (USA); Bachelor of Science (BS) (Hons) in Nursing from the State University of New York at Albany (USA), where he also became a Licensed Registered Nurse (RN); and a Diploma in Nursing Science from the Jewish Hospital & Medical Centre of Brooklyn (USA).
