AWA Foundation Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Swinging "FORE" Scholarships Golf Outing

DETROIT - Aug. 5, 2015 - PRLog -- West Bloomfield, MI–Automotive Women’s Alliance Foundation (AWAF), announced today that August 17, 2015 marks the foundation’s 20^th year anniversary of their Swinging “FORE” Scholarships Golf Outing.

Originally starting in 1993 as the Detroit chapter of Women’s Automotive Alliance International (WAAI), with a casual lunch of 12 women from many different areas of the automotive industry who wanted to connect and share experiences with other women in their fields. In 2001 that group of women broke from the WAAI, and formed the Automotive Women’s Alliance Incorporated.  While the purpose was primarily the same, AWA, Inc. decided to focus largely on a scholarship program that would support the future of women in the automotive industry. In 2002, the Automotive Women’s Alliance became a Foundation (AWAF), and achieved non-profit status. Today AWAF has 192 members and scholarships remain at the heart of their mission.  With $230,000 awarded to 93 recipients since 2001, AWAF will continue to host professional and special events to ensure the program continues to thrive.

Now in its 20^th year, the AWAF’s annual Golf Outing is an 18 hole scramble to raise funds to support AWAF’s Scholarship program.  Scholarships are awarded to female, North American citizens, with a passion for a career or advancement in the automotive and its related industries. In order to be eligible for a scholarship, applicants should be already accepted to or enrolled in an accredited collegiate program, with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Funded by donations from sponsors and proceeds from events, including the annual golf outing, each recipient is awarded $2,500.

“This 20^th anniversary of our Swinging “FORE” Scholarships golf outing will be a wonderful celebration of what AWAF has been able to accomplish in terms of raising money for scholarships,” said Sherry Muir Irwin, president of AWAF.  “With this 20^th anniversary event, we will be awarding 13 more scholarships and raising the total amount awarded to well over a quarter of a million dollars!  Last year was a record-breaker for the number of scholarships awarded and the amount of money given – and we’ve blown that record right out of the water in 2015!  It’s definitely time to celebrate!” The 20^th anniversary Swinging “FORE” Golf outing will be August 17^, 2015 at Tam-O-Shanter Country Club in West Bloomfield, MI.
