Aug. 4, 2015 - PRLog -- Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) plays a pivotal role in the cellular response to oxygen deprivation. Like the related HIF-2α and HIF-3α, HIF-1α is a hypoxia-stabilized transcription factor that alters the expression of many genes involved in processes ranging from angiogenesis to erythropoiesis. Given the chronic hypoxia commonly found in tumors, it is not surprising that HIF-1α is overexpressed in many human cancers, though its activity is also crucial in other common pathological states as well as for normal developmental pathways.
