Follow on Google News | SAFE Coalition NC will unleash a social media barrage on NC State Representaive Leo#BlackLivesMatter but State Rep. Leo Daughtry continues to ignore our demand for justice. Today we will tell the citizens of North Carolina exactly where he stands.
By: SAFE Coalition http://www.newsobserver.com/ SAFE Coalition NC worked with Rep. Rodney Moore to create a bill that would allow all municipalities to form Citizen Police Review Boards with investigatory and subpoena power. The bill would form a committee to promulgate rules around diversity and implicate bias training. The committee would release their findings yearly .The bill would also strengthen data collection standards including homicide by police data. On March 11th, Rep. Rodney Moore held a press conference with supportive legislators and SAFE Coalition members to introduce the bill. “This is a great first step in having a conversation about how police and law enforcement agencies interact with our communities of color, and with the community as a whole,” Moore said. “We are striving to come up with ways to rebuild the public’s trust in law enforcement agencies and have open and fair dialogue about the ways we can hold people accountable for misdeeds.” After 2 months of inaction, SAFE Coalition NC held a Lobby Day at the NC Statehouse for victims of discriminatory profiling and police misconduct. Over 50 victims walked the halls and personally talked to conservative members of the House Judiciary Committee including the Chair of the committee Representative Leo Daughtry. Rep. Daughtry stated that he would review H193, talk to law enforcement and move forward on scheduling the bill to be heard. Two months later, the NC General Assembly has passed a bill to protect confederate memorials from damage but has not even taken the time to hear a bill that would protect people of color from death or injury at the hands of law enforcement. It is time to tell the people of North Carolina and this country that Confederate symbolism is more important than the lives of black and brown North Carolina citizens. Today at 9am SAFE Coalition North Carolina, through social media, is unleashing a social media barrage on NC. State Representaive Leo Daughtryready laws on the books to protect us. Who is going to explain that to the family of Jonathan Ferrell? Who is going to explain that to the multitude of Latino drivers profiled by the Alamance County Sherriff Terry Johnson? Due to their failure to act, at 9am today SAFE Coalition NC will have our entire social reach of 300,000 people simultaneously use #SAFEfromprofiling to tell the world that the NC Legislature will not let H193 be heard or voted on. We will also place hundreds of phone calls and emails to the office of Rep. Leo Daughtry. End
