CENTENNIAL, Colo. - July 23, 2015 - PRLog -- Following a groundbreaking ceremony on July 17, 2015 at Snow Mountain Ranch in Granby, Colorado, Adam’s Camp and the YMCA of the Rockies proudly announced the long-time partners are moving ahead with the construction of a new multi-use facility that will give Adam’s Camp an even greater ability to provide its distinct therapies to children with special needs and increase the capacity of YMCA of the Rockies to serve families.

Adam’s Camp and the YMCA of the Rockies will split the investment in constructing the estimated $2.3 million facility. When Adam’s Camp and the YMCA of the Rockies unveiled the “Building Potentials” campaign in 2014, the partners anticipated construction would start in 2016. However, Adam’s Camp’s accelerated success in reaching 80 percent of its fundraising goal of $1.15 million early in the campaign created the opportunity to begin in construction 2015.

Construction of the new building is slated to begin in earnest in September of 2015 and should take approximately nine months to complete. The yet-to-be-named building will be 6,500 square feet and will provide expanded space to provide intensive developmental therapies as well as a commercial kitchen needed for preparation of all meals for Adam’s Camp programs. It will also increase the capacity of the YMCA of the Rockies’ Snow Mountain Ranch location to host banquets, meetings and programs. TDS Construction of Winter Park will serve as the general contractor for the building and Basis Architecture, P.C. of Estes Park is the project’s architect.

This project is the second time Adam’s Camp and the YMCA of the Rockies have partnered on constructing a facility at Snow Mountain Ranch. In 1999, the two organizations worked together to build Adam’s Camp Summit, a 2,300 square foot facility that Adam’s Camp uses for therapy and family programming and the YMCA of the Rockies uses the facility to serve groups and families.

“For nearly 30 years, the YMCA of the Rockies has been one of our most important partners in delivering our model of intensive therapy to children with special needs,” said Adam’s Camp Founder Karel Horney. “We are thrilled to again join forces with ‘The Y’ in making our vision of a new building that will provide a bright future for the next generation of Adam’s Camp families a reality.”

“The goal of strengthening families has always been common ground we share with Adam’s Camp,” said YMCA of the Rockies CEO Kent Meyer. “Sharing the common ground of the Summit building, and now this wonderful new building, will elevate both of our organizations for years to come.”

Efforts to close out the capital campaign are continuing and Adam’s Camp is accepting donations through its crowd-funding campaign at www.coloradogives.org/buildingpotentials.

About Adam’s Camp

Adam’s Camp was founded in 1986 by Karel and Bob Horney, the parents of Adam, a 6-year-old boy with cerebral palsy, and his physical therapist. Karel and Bob found a physical therapist who provided intensive therapy several hours each day for a full week that led to Adam walking for the first time with the aid of a walker. This progress prompted the creation of the Adam’s Camp model of five families and five therapists coming together for a week of intensive therapy at Snow Mountain Ranch. The mission of Adam’s Camp is to maximize the strengths and potential of children and young adults with special needs. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 6 children in the U.S. has a developmental disability, which translates to 202,747 children in Colorado alone. Children with developmental disabilities are at a disadvantage educationally and socially. Adam's Camp is the only organization in Colorado that practices the intensive, multi-disciplinary, family-centered therapy model to address that disadvantage. Adam’s Camp has served more than 10,000 children/youth with special needs and their families and has expanded to Nantucket, New Hampshire and Alaska.
