Un Women's USNC-LA Chapter Partners With SIMA & Local Artists To Host Film Screening & Art Exhibit

Event hosted at EarthWE@Bergamot Station Will Address Violence Against Women Around the World
 
LOS ANGELES - July 20, 2015 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES, CA - July 20, 2015 – The Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the United States National Committee for United Nations Women will host a special film screening and art exhibit on Friday, July 23 from 7pm-10pm at EarthWE@Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. As part of the chapter’s second annual SIMA Shorts Screening Series: Examining Violence Against Women, the event will address the various forms of violence experienced by women around the world through film and art. Two award-winning short documentary films from the Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA) Collection will be screened, followed by an exhibit showcasing artwork from local female artists.

Featured films include:

·  WHEN THE TIME COMES (2013) - Directed by Charles Gay, this 13-minute documentary spotlights female circumcision in Kenya.

·   CAN’T HIDE ME (2014) – Directed by Madhuri Mohinda, this 26-minute documentary follows women in India who are fighting often invisible barriers to achieving their dreams.

·   AT HOME, IN BED, AND IN THE STREETS (2013) – Directed by Liz Miller, this 36-minute documentary follows Puntos de Encuentro, an inspiring Nicaraguan women's rights group. Screenwriter Ellen Gavin is scheduled to speak about the film. (Note: This film will not be shown, but attendees will be provided with a screener link to take home and view.)

Artwork from local female artists - Amanda Stojanov, Judy Toretti and María del Carmen Lamadrid – will be on display following the screening.

Light snacks will be provided courtesy of Seasons 52. Proceeds from the screening will benefit USNC-UN Women.
