Third Friday reception, juror talk, and open mic event: August 21^st from 6-9 pm

Coming soon! Starting July 30, we are proud to present our third annual community show about social justice. The exhibit is intentionally broad in scope so that each artist may address issues of local, national, and international importance. The title, derived from a 1955 Quaker pamphlet, "Speak Truth to Power," illustrates a commitment to voicing our diverse truths to the systems and individuals shaping the society in which we live.

This year’s show was juried by elin o’Hara slavick, Professor of Art at UNC Chapel Hill, international exhibitor, author, curator, and activist.

The show will feature exemplary 2D and 3D works in photography, painting, mixed media, resin and light, glass, metal, and wood, as well as audio and video entries. The high impact artwork spans topics including reactions to the Confederate flag and ongoing racial divides, deportation, police brutality, environmental destruction, capitalism and the petroleum industry, gun violence, treatment of veterans, and many other issues of concern.

The African-American Cultural Festival of Raleigh and Wake County, with ArtsNow, will host the Open Mic portion of the Truth to Power show. The open mic event will be outside at the Five Points Plaza on Friday, August 21^st from 6-9 pm and will run concurrently with the Third Friday reception at Pleiades Gallery.

Visitors to the exhibit will cast votes for a People’s Choice Award, the winner of which will be announced after the Third Friday reception.
