HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. - July 14, 2015 - PRLog -- Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, feeding one out of every 10 Long Islanders, has received a significant gift in the amount of $550,000 from the John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation.  The gift will be used to support Island Harvest Food Bank’s overall mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, including support of Island Harvest’s portfolio of programs and services that go above and beyond other standard feeding programs.

“Our five-year, $550,000 commitment to Island Harvest recognizes the need for adequate nutrition for Long Islanders who are financially unable to meet that goal,” stated John Kornreich.  “Amidst the relative prosperity of Long Island, is a hidden, 10% of the population, who are hungry for enough food - and the right food - for children and adults alike.”

“Close to 94 cents of every dollar contributed to Island Harvest is directed towards programs and services that have a direct impact on the local community, so this very generous contribution from the John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation, is very important to Island Harvest Food Bank and will surely have a lasting impact on our organization and the Long Island region and the people who benefit from our important work,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO, Island Harvest.  “On behalf of the entire Island Harvest organization, I would like to express our most sincere gratitude to both John and Janet Kornreich.”

The John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation gift of $550,000 to Island Harvest will primarily, but not exclusively, be used to fund a revamped IT infrastructure to support efficiencies in the collection, warehousing and distribution of food.  The donation will also be used to expand the existing Island Harvest Center for Targeted Populations programs including those focusing on senior and military veteran communities.  Island Harvest delivers signature programs of support assistance and referral services designed to help targeted populations including seniors, veterans and children.

“Under the highly capable and experienced leadership of President Randi Shubin Dresner, we are confident that our Foundations’ funding will have a huge impact on the people they serve,” continued Kornreich.

The mission of the John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation is to help those who can’t.  It makes long-term, predictable, financial commitments to charities based on Long Island, where the Foundation’s funds can make a meaningful difference, targeted for specific purposes.

Since 1992, Island Harvest has grown to become the largest hunger relief organization in the region, feeding and supporting 316,000 Long Islanders annually, helping to change the lives of millions.  By relying on volunteers, in-kind services, and donated food, close to 94 cents of every dollar contributed to Island Harvest Food Bank directly benefits their robust programs and initiatives.

With a mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, Island Harvest has pioneered innovative and effective food and product collection and distribution systems, hunger awareness and nutrition education programs, job training programs, services for targeted populations, and outreach and advocacy initiatives.  Island Harvest is a leading agency in the region in disaster relief and emergency response readiness for food and product distribution, support and services.  Island Harvest is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity.
