MOTERWRITER.COM reviews the latest hit novel – Now For a Tearful Smile

The post Emergency period in India forms the backdrop for an intricate life & love story of two individuals

KOCHI, India - July 14, 2015 - PRLog -- Author C. Radhakrishnan’s novel ‘Now For a Tearful Smile’ is an all revealing insight into the sub consciousness and conscience of a nation through the eyes of Arjun, a poet, a revolutionary and an ascetic. Set in the tumultuous post Emergency period in India, the novel chronicles the love story of two people, a man and a woman, a husband and wife both living under false identities. Reiterating how the individual is always bound by the collective; the social, cultural, political and economic milieu of the nation play an important part in shaping the lives of its lead protagonists, often charting the course of their destiny. The original work was published in Malayalam in 1994; the English version is translated by Kairali Narayanan.

The author writes himself into the book as a nameless character who introduces the story and its protagonists to us. Thappa is introduced as a sickly looking old man but his eyes reveal contentment, peace and also secrets. Yes, secrets! And he shares his to the author who in turn shares it with us. Thappa has led a double life all this while, pretending to be someone else to escape the clutches of law as the state had branded him a revolutionary and a menace.

You’ll be swept into the world of Thappa and Ani and find yourself living their life for the length of the book and maybe some more. And like the constant ebb and flow of life that brings bouquets and brickbats into one’s life, their destiny also hangs in the fine balance of the whims and fancies of heavenly gods and human gods.

“Human spirit can manifest itself in strange and magical ways when confronted by harsh realities of life on all fronts, it will aim to escape but sometimes even that may prove unattainable,” C. Radhakrishnan told us when we interviewed him in connection with the book’s promotion. When we spoke with a few readers at a popular online book forum, they said the author’s discovery of emotions of romance & love even in the oddest of places and individuals is quite remarkable. One of the readers Jeff said "This book has so much sadness and yet the absurdity of life provides some back handed humor. It has touched my heart and will always occupy a special place in it.” Kevin Peter who reviewed the book for Moterwriter.com said that the book throws light on the social fabric of India during a period that was truly testing. “We are exposed to the inner most thoughts and feelings of the characters from early on and then on we’ll never question their actions or be stupefied by their decisions. It’s just wonderful writing!”
