I Am will kick off Pride weekend with music that celebrates individuality and being true to oneself on life’s ever-changing path. From the “old school” feminist music of Holly Near to hits from current powerhouse singers like Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga and Sara Bareilles, I Am promises to be uplifting, affirming and fun. “I Am celebrates the process of discovering and defining who we are and what we want to be. It’s about accepting -- and rejoicing in – the fact that we are the authors of our own stories,” commented SDWC President Heather Robert. Artistic Director Kathleen Hansen says, "Pride season encourages each of us to be proud of who we are. It’s about embracing individuality, discovering your personal identity and coming to terms with your authentic self. I Am explores all of that and approaches individual identity not as a static 'thing', but as a fluid, evolving journey." The theme of the evolving journey of life also came through in the answers of many of SDWC’s members when they were asked what “I Am” meant to them. “Constantly being refined,” “an unending work in progress,” “a seeker of greater understanding,” Coming off the success of its spring concert, Broadway, Our Way with guest Frenchie Davis, SDWC’s summer chorus of 55 women is deep into rehearsals preparing for this exciting new addition to their usual Pride Season. With plenty of choral music, the show will also include a few solo and small ensemble numbers as well as the debut of a powerful original spoken word piece written by SDWC member Claire Beaumont. Beer, wine and appetizers will be available at a 6:30pm happy hour in the courtyard of the Irenic, along with complimentary water and coffee. Tickets are just $12 through June 30th and then go up to $15 on July 1st.
