The Human Legion is the Accidental Bestseller
Sci Fi blockbuster book series sells 50,000 in 6 months through word of mouth alone.
By: Tim C. Taylor
Commenting on the success of the self-published book series, author Tim C. Taylor said: “The most bizarre thing about the success of the Human Legion is that I had already decided to switch career away from publishing before I’d finished the books. Not wanting the distraction of the fanfare around a book launch while I was retraining for a new career, when I released Marine Cadet I didn’t tell anyone, not even a mention on Facebook. It all happened through word of mouth on Amazon.com.”
Word-of-mouth has been the key to the success of the Human Legion. Earlier in June, the series received its first review outside of Amazon and Goodreads.com. Elsewhere there have been no reviews, interviews, or any other mentions other than on the Facebook pages of Taylor’s friends, and on humanlegion.com.
On the lack of attention, Taylor said: “You probably expect me to be disappointed that traditional science fiction organizations, and media such as newsstand magazines, largely act as if self-published books don’t exist. You’d be wrong. The fact is that Amazon does such a better job than traditional book taste setters at matching my book to my target audience that if the Human Legion were to be featured in, say, an old-fashioned science fiction print magazine, all that would achieve would be to place my book in front of a large number of readers who are not my target audience. Friends like to point out that Ancillary Justice, the most talked-about science fiction book of 2014, sold 30,000 copies in its first ten months, but my Human Legion books sold 30,000 in just seven weeks at the start of 2015. I just laugh and explain that there are far more successful science fiction authors than me who are equally unknown, except by the people who count: our readers.”
Having released three Human Legion books already this year, Taylor has shelved plans for a career change and is working on a fourth. His goal is to hit 100,000 sales in its first year… and two reviews.
