The Incredible Mission of Alex Niles

PHILADELPHIA - June 26, 2015 - PRLog -- Imagine you’re 30 years old; as a former division one scholarship soccer player at Drexel University, you’re as healthy as a horse. You are enjoying your time traveling the world, spending time with friends and ecstatic to see what lies ahead. This was the exact situation of Alex Niles, before he was diagnosed with stage IV gastric cancer in the fall of 2013. Not surprisingly, Alex describes this devastating news as somewhat of a punch to the stomach. He went from on top of the world one second to a world of adversity the next.

One would think that after hearing news like this, all of Alex’s energy would go into simply batting to stay alive. At this stage of his cancer, there is no way of completely ridding him of the disease. Amazingly, Alex has stayed positive throughout all of this adversity and has reached out to others battling cancer as well. But, along with staying positive and being a mentor to many, Alex has come up with a way to physically help others who need chemotherapy.

When cancer patients need chemo, they often are given drugs through a port in their chest. To do this, they need to remove their shirt for obvious reasons. As Alex and many other cancer patients will tell you, this can be a very inconvenient and even psychologically damaging procedure. Whether the patient is uncomfortable with their body at the moment or does not want to remove his or her shirt because they are cold, port access is often something that patients dread. Alex even said that taking his shirt off to be given drugs made him feel like a lab rat. Eventually, during one of Alex’s port accesses, he decided to just cut a hole in his shirt because he didn’t want to take it off. This led him to invent CureWear, which is essentially a patch that can be put over a hole in the shirt where a patient’s port can be accessed. So, instead of removing clothing to be given medicine, a patient can simply remove the patch for a much more convenient port access. The idea of the product is to create a level of comfort for patients that was previously absent, and to make them feel more “normal”. While it may seem like a minor adjustment to a piece of clothing, CureWear can make a positive impact for patients of all ages who cherish any source of comfort they can get. Now you may be asking, “What does this have to do with Inspyr Socks?”
