Follow on Google News | Czech Center NY brings the Roaring 20's Back this Summer with their New Rooftop Ciné-Concert SeriesBy: Czech Center Guests will arrive in their swanky Roaring Twenties style as the series launches on July 7, at 7 pm, with the screening of the Czech silent classic The Loves of Kacenka Strnadova(Lásky Kačenky Strnadové), accompanied by the talented Francesco Boccaro Trio. Enjoy a delicious welcome drink, mingle with a delightful crowd, view the exquisite skyline as the sun sets to live music, and savor the cinematic stars beneath the stars. The series concludes on August 25th with a Wrap Party where guests dress in their favorite 1920s fashion to finish out the series with the comdey film, An Old Gangster's Molls. Walter Lang and Dorothy Davenport, 1925, 77 min., silent film Live music: Deborah Bradley-Kramer & son, piano and cello Pianist Deborah Bradley-Kramer, a professor at Columbia University and world-class classical pianist, performs with her seven year old son Jonah Kramer, promising musician on the cello. JULY 21 Film: Eroticon | Erotikon Dir. Gustav Machatý, 1929, 85 min., silent film Live music: Ben Model, piano Ben Model is one of the USA's leading silent film accompanists and has been playing piano and organ for silents at MoMA since 1984. JULY 28 Film: Madame X Dir. Sam Wood (with Gustav Machatý contributing) Music overture: Joseph Morag, violinist. Winner of Columbia concerto competition, and concert master of NY Youth symphony. AUGUST 4 Film: A Woman of Affairs The most complete version of this American silent was discovered at the Czech film archive in Prague. Dir. By Clarence Brown, 1928, 98 min., silent film Live music: Henry Grimes & Brandon Ross Henry Grimes is a progenitor and architect of the music known as 'free jazz'. He has collaborated on over 90 recordings with some of the greatest legends of the music, from the '50s and '60s until today. Brandon Ross presently leading the groups Brandon Ross & Blazing Beauty is guitarist, composer, arranger, singer and songwriter who has crafted a personal approach to guitar and improvisation that has taken him all over the world. AUGUST 11 Film: Blonde Venus Dir. Josef von Sternberg, 1932, 93 min., “early talkie” Live music: Overture by duo Libretto Metro: Pavlína Horáková, singer and pianist Drew Spradlin. Mezzo-soprano Pavlína Horáková has performed the title role in the opera Carmen and Berta in the Barber of Seville with the Opera Amore, as well as a number of solo recitals in New York City. Winner of the Czech National Vocal Competition. AUGUST 18 Film: May Fairy Tale | Pohádka máje Dir. Karel Anton, 1926, silent film Live music: Nancy Jo Snider, cello Cellist Nancy Jo Snider, director of the Music Program at American University, is a member of the Opera Lafayette Orchestra and performs regularly in a variety of chamber and period instrument ensembles.
