WILMINGTON, N.C. - June 23, 2015 - PRLog -- Within less than a year’s time, entrepreneur and aspiring counselor Tom Seaman went from noticing a little stiffness in his neck to spending nearly 24 hours a day rolling on the floor with relentless, chronic pain. In his new book, Diagnosis Dystonia: Navigating the Journey,he chronicles his experiences with cervical dystonia, a little-known but debilitating neurological disorder.

“Dystonia has been the toughest challenge of my life,” Seaman explains. “No injury, job, relationship, family crisis, or anything else has been as demanding physically and mentally. And I didn’t see it coming.”

According to the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, dystonia is a chronic, often disabling, movement disorder marked by extreme, involuntary muscle contractions that cause twisting, repetitive body movements and abnormal postures. There are many subtypes that impact people of all ages and backgrounds. Common signs include twisting or abnormal movements of the head and neck, excessive blinking, a breathy or choking voice, hand cramps, or a dragging foot. Dystonia is frequently misdiagnosed due to a lack of awareness among both the public and healthcare providers.

When Seaman’s doctors could not provide an explanation for his bizarre, painful neck postures and extreme muscle spasms, he essentially diagnosed himself in 2002 after researching the internet and seeking confirmation from a neurologist with special training in movement disorders. After numerous ineffective treatments and years of physical and mental pain, Seaman turned the tide by learning and applying a variety of symptom management techniques that greatly improved his quality of life. In addition to better managing his dystonia, he lost 150 pounds that he gained due to his sedentary lifestyle with chronic pain. Seaman is now dedicated to helping others with dystonia benefit from his harrowing experiences. In addition to being a Professional Life Coach, he is a dedicated dystonia awareness advocate.

Diagnosis Dystonia: Navigating the Journey is an autobiographical, self-help book that provides firsthand information on dystonia treatment options, coping strategies, practical tips for daily living, and tools for navigating the physical and mental challenges of life with a chronic health condition. Seaman shares his roadmap for rescuing oneself from the powerful downward spiral of chronic illness, depression, anxiety, and counterproductive coping behaviors. The book is included on the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s recommended reading list.  More information can be found at: http://www.diagnosisdystonia.com.
