By: Medical Tourism Association The sponsorship agreement comes on the heels of Cleveland Clinic's foray into oil-rich Abu Dhabi and the opening of an ultra-modern, 364-bed specialty hospital on Al Maryah Island. “The United Arab Emirates and nations in the Middle East have set their sights on expanding medical tourism beyond their regional borders to reach a global audience,” said Renée-Marie Stephano, President of the Medical Tourism Association® Cleveland Clinic already helps manage the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City acute-care facility in Abu Dhabi. But, this new venture will, for the first time, put Cleveland Clinic’s name and personnel in the region. The expansion also presents a tremendous opportunity for healthcare professionals in the United States and abroad. About 80 percent of the 182 doctors hired to work in Abu Dhabi are from North America including many who have worked at the Cleveland Clinic. Another 2,800 clinical and non-clinical caregivers have been trained. The World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress attracts some 3,000 key stakeholders – hospital administrators, doctors and clinicians, employers, government policy makers, insurance executives, facilitators, and hospitality and tourism interests – from across the globe to share their experiences and identify and solve issues that bear significantly on the industry.
