CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - June 18, 2015 - PRLog -- International Yoga Day, June 21

The United Nations and 177 countries through the United Nation’s General Assembly Resolution have declared the 21st of June as the International Day of Yoga. More than 100 US cities and more than 3000 cities worldwide will be celebrating the United Nation’s First International Day of Yoga. Alexandria, LA is one of them. This worldwide celebration of yoga will culminate with a 90-minute, entry-free yoga session that will include yoga poses, wisdom and meditation. Participants in Alexandria will be joining millions of other people around the world in celebration. The event in Alexandria will follow the same format as Times Square in New York City and thousands of other locations around the world and will feature the deeper dimensions of Yoga through 90 minutes of restorative asana practice, wisdom, breathing and meditation. The coordinators of the International Day of Yoga in Alexandria are Maria Olagues and Lori DeBlieux, instructors and owners of Yoga ya ya (www.yoga-yaya.com), yoga teacher b. Hedrick, and Shonu Nangia who teaches the Happiness Program offered by the Art of Living Foundation (www.artofliving.org). According to Nangia, “this free event is being organized by local volunteers, fueled by our love of yoga, as a service to our community. No prior experience with yoga is necessary – just an open mind and a caring heart.” In her message to the community, Olagues states “it's happening this coming Sunday. It's open and free to all members of the community. We will be following the same format as Times Square and 100's of other locations around the world. We have yoga instructors from all over the community that will be attending.” The program begins at 8:00 am and the venue is the Big Island Field in City Park. The location will move to the Metroplex across from Cabrini in case it rains. The Art of Living is an international non-profit organization with local roots in the community, nationally and globally and is committed to uplifting youth, families and communities by spreading the ancient and universal practice and philosophy of yoga. With its broad global presence, the Art of Living Foundation aims to unite with community members and organizations across the globe to celebrate the UN’s recognition of yoga. Yoga in all its aspects enhances physical and emotional health, increases energy levels and improves interpersonal and societal relationships, leading to a more stress-free and violencefree, peaceful society. The Foundation was founded in 1981 by global humanitarian, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (www.srisri.org). Derived from the Sanskrit word yuj, Yoga means union. According to Sri Sri, "Yoga is skill in action. The skill is to see, how to keep your spirit uplifted, your energy high and accomplish the task in hand. This comes only by Yoga. Yoga should not be limited or misunderstood as just some exercise. It is a holistic development, expression and connection of human life. In the West, people are most familiar with physical postures, or asana of Yoga. But yoga is more than a sophisticated system of exercise, or a method of health cultivation, although it definitely is both. Yoga offers something even more rare and valuable: a doorway into the fullness of our experience as embodied beings. It invites us to relax, to meditate, to breathe and move with mindfulness, and to cultivate awareness of our present experience.”
