Stepinac High School's Acclaimed Drama Club Wins 4 Top Metro Awards for "Billy Elliot"

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - June 11, 2015 - PRLog -- Archbishop Stepinac High School’s  acclaimed Drama Club captured top Metro Awards— the highest honors that high school production groups can win in the New York region—for its landmark production of Billy Elliot.

Billy won four Metro Awards for Best Director (Frank Portanova, Director of the Drama Club); Best Actress in a Leading Role (Gianna Prignano); Best Dance Performance (John Guaragna) and Best Vocal Performance by a Female (Amelia Sasson).

Stepinac was the first high school in the nation to be given the rights to stage Elton John’s Tony Award-winning musical about a boy in a rough mining town in England who would rather dance than learn to be a boxer.

Last year, Stepinac’s Drama Club was one of only a few schools in the U.S. that were licensed to perform Disney’s Mary Poppins which garnered top Metro Awards including Best Director for Mr. Portanova.

Since 1949, the school’s Drama Club has won critical acclaim for its productions of fall dramas and spring musicals. The productions have nurtured the talents of many young students at Stepinac. Some went on to greater fame including Academy Award winner Jon Voight and Emmy-Award winner Alan Alda.

Stepinac again served as the host venue for the Annual Metro Awards.
