KOCHI, India - June 11, 2015 - PRLog -- A prestigious project from Indian Defense establishment underwent optimization using CFD and experimental validation by model test partnering with Navgathi. Such a process enables ship owner to try a large number of hull shapes and identify an optimum lines that meets the performance requirements and generate immense fuel savings in the vessels life time.

The detailed design for this 25 meter IR Classed RO-RO Barge is a unique project which Navgathi undertook. In recent years Navgathi’s Research and Development wing has intensified the application of numerical hydrodynamics in marine design. As prediction using statistical methods were inappropriate and inaccurate, Computational Fluid Dynamic method was used for resistance calculations. Total resistance of model was calculated for different speeds and surface waves around model were obtained numerically. CFD results were in good match with the experimental modal test conducted at IIT madras.

During the different stages of the design, the use of advanced CFD tools allow Navgathi to determine the resistance of the vessel accurately, in still water or on any sea state, for bare hull or a complete hull with appendages. We know that identifying an optimum hull form that ensures lowest fuel consumption is a first step in successful vessel design.

In the field of ship hydrodynamics we provide services for ship resistance analysis, hull form optimization, powering calculations etc. Furthermore, we have broad experience in determining the resistance and powering for different types of vessels, like high speed boats, passenger ferries, cargo vessels.

We help the vessel owners and operators to save fuel by providing them a better design. For vessels like RSV and Inland vessels where not much effort is put in better design (CFD, modal test etc.), It is clear that CFD can improve the design (hull, propeller) by reducing the consumption by 10%. That 10% translates to 20 lakhs per year (for a 1500 DWT vessel running 250 days). CFD analysis and model test validation is about 20 lakhs which gives a ROI of one year for this investment.
