BRONX, N.Y. - June 7, 2015 - PRLog -- Unless you are a medical professional, it is not altogether likely that you will know the difference between varicose and spider veins. In fact, until now, you may not have known that there was a difference at all. Many people could be forgiven for thinking that they are the same. There are variations between them, however, as we are about to see.

The first thing to note is that they do both have the same cause. This is when vein valves are dysfunctional, thus causing your blood to pool in your legs rather than being returned to your heart. What happens next is the difference between the two types of vein problems. The visual presentation of each is different, and so are the treatments which can be given to you, which is why it is so important to make the distinction.

In the case of varicose veins, they are normally found on the legs, and they appear large and bulging. They can cause the affected area to swell up and can also be very painful. This can lead to other health concerns further down the line. Spider veins, on the other hand, look like webs. They are networks of veins which have all been affected by the same problem. They are normally less painful than varicose veins, but this does not mean that you should not get them looked at.

In the past, it was difficult to get rid of varicose veins. Treatments would be carried out throughout the life of the sufferer, with several different visits required. In modern times, however, we are much better at getting rid of these problems. Although you can never be sure that there will not be a recurrence, the chances are now far lower.

Be sure that you do get treatment, as permanent damage may be caused if you do not. You can end up with vascular system problems because the varicose veins are an early indication of vascular inefficiency. They are progressively destructive, meaning that your problems will only continue to get worse. Other medical problems may also arise as a result.

When it comes to causing these issues, there are a couple of myths that we can clear up. Some people think that getting vascular issues is caused by not being hydrated enough. This is not actually the case, and there are several factors which can contribute to the development of a condition. Varicose or spider veins can be a result of contributing effects from genetics, weight, age, and the history of injuries. Getting pregnant or standing for a long time during the day can also play a part. Some people even think that crossing your legs can play a part in causing varicose veins, but this is simply not true.

If you think you may be suffering from varicose or spider veins, get a diagnosis as soon as possible.
